At Tenuta di Poggiolame

Neal Winfield

Here at Arte Umbria we are thrilled that Neal is joining us to lead a Stained Glass workshop with us 22nd August 2018.

Glass design in South Wales Neal graduated from the Stourbridge College of Art where he studied a degree in Glass Design and Art History. At Stourbridge, whilst exploring a wide range of glass working processes, he fell in love with the art of making stained glass, leaded lights.

Along with telling a story, Neal adores the intensity of colour and need of bold shapes that make it such a joy with which to work.

After graduating he moved to Cilfynydd in South Wales, where he established a studio, undertaking many domestic and secular commissions and taking part in exhibitions and shows.

Among Neal’s projects, were the restoration of the old Victorian windows in Dyffryn Country House and the Muni in Pontypridd.

His restoration skills were also called upon for some lost and broken panes at a number of churches in and around Cardiff. He also worked for some of South Wales’ breweries, restoring old windows and creating new windows for pubs and bars around the area.

Art in Italy

Since 2007 Neal has lived permanently in Umbria, Italy, where he continues to create and exhibit his work.

He plays an active part in the artistic community of the Upper Tiber Valley, with solo shows in Citta di Castello, Montone and Umbertide.

Neal also gives lectures and talks on his particular artistic viewpoint and style of design to interested local groups and visiting artists and students.

Stained Glass Course

The week long course at ArteUmbria will give students an exciting introduction into working with glass, designing for its peculiarities and the process of cutting and assembling a stained glass window.

Each will student take away with them a 30cm x 30cm leaded light panel and the knowledge and confidence to make further windows.

During the week there will also be presentations on glass production and the story of stained glass along with an informative visit to the nearby Piegaro Glass Museum, where for centuries, handmade bottles for Chianti wine were produced.
