Stone Carving with Simon Keeley
Simon is joining us again for another great week of inspirational stone carving and tutoring on 26 July 2017. Only 2 places remain already!
Don't miss out!
Due to demand we are now running a second week starting on the 2nd August 2017, spaces for these courses fill up fast book now!
Simon Keeley is a Stone Carver who is continuing his family traditional link to stone carving, which was inspired by Lincoln Cathedral. His first training was as a Stone Mason at York college and later working as a Stone Mason for Bowman and Sons in Stamford, Lincolnshire.
He went on to train as a Stone Carver at the London City and Guilds Art School, dealing predominantly with historical/ornamental carving. His deep passion is to carve stone, a vocation that he has chosen; he feels it is linked to a spiritual path, which is gradually revealing the way.
Simon is happy tutoring total beginners and experienced artists, working in stone.
His 7 night week from July 26 2017 will include 6 days of tutoring beginning with clay work to establish and study the finished carved work, then how to transfer this work onto the the stone. He then teaches carving techniques and inspires you onward. At the end of the week each student will have a finished carving to around 25 x 25 x 20 sq cm - all their own work. These works will be transported back to England for collection, or if from further afield it can be arranged to have them shipped. All materials and tools are supplied. A trip to Assisi is included during the week to look at the wonderful St Francis Baslica and the glorious architecture and carving.
The week, as always, will feature everything Arte Umbria has to offer. Good food, wine and camaraderie with a house party atmosphere in the evenings.
Simon is the most inspirational of tutors.
From one of his students
"I met Simon Keeley quite by chance a couple of years ago and started his classes as a complete novice. I'm already getting invitations to exhibit my work and just last week I got my first commission. He is a very accomplished teacher and knows just how to lead students into composing their first work in a way that avoids anything technically difficult. He also knows how to introduce new challenges that help you grow as a stonecarver at a pace that keeps every class fresh and exciting whatever your level of experience. Just as importantly, Simon's great fun and I always go home from the class feeling as if I've been laughing all day." Nick
He regularly takes on commissions and also produces free flowing sculptural carving for ecclesiastical, gallery, garden, public art spaces and private individuals.
His most prestigious commissions being carving the Corbel Angel for Westminster Abbey and carving the missing head from 'Canova’s ‘Three Graces’. A great honour and involved working with the V & A Museum.
His range of skills as a stone carver involves an extensive knowledge of stone, drawing nature, ornament and the human figure.
Creating scale models of any of the afore-mentioned in clay or wax, making moulds, then casting in plaster or bronze. Photography is essential, archive and history of art is frequently researched for each project. If required your carvings can be shipped back to Simon in one delivery, costs to be shared between the group of students.
