Venice with Arte Umbria and Painting in Europe
We ran this course in 2016 and it was hugely successful and popular so we are delighted to offer this trip to Venice again under the Arte Umbria umbrella in 2017, supported by our sister company Painting in Europe.

What the course will offer
Painting with Tim around different locations in Venice for 7 days. There will be lots of demonstrations by Tim and one-to-one tuition. It is entirely up to you if you want to jump in and out of painting, or you can take advantage of ‘sightseeing’ at your leisure.
This is perfect if you want to come with a non-painting partner as there is so much for them to see and do in Venice whilst you are out and about painting and they can join you with a big discount. You are spoilt for choice in this romantic, historic city. All the pleasure, quality tutoring and congenial company you’ve come to expect from Arte Umbria but this time it will be in this beauteous location. Places are limited so early booking is advised.
Included in the price is a collection and return from Marco Polo airport and transportation by water taxi (the best way to arrive in Venice) to our hotel, also a 7 day Vaporetto (water bus) ticket that will take you everywhere in Venice, and to all the islands as well. For guests travelling from the United Kingdom, the flight we are recommending is with EasyJet to Venice Marco Polo from London Gatwick. Ideally guests should aim to arrive at around 16.30pm to take advantage of the water taxi but for guests arriving at different times we will do our very best to meet you and bring you to the hotel on a Vaporetto.
We are so fortunate to be able to offer a delightful bijou, privately-run 3* hotel on the Lido which is exclusively for our use during the week. The hotel (just a 2 minujte walk from the Vaporetto/Taxi stop) is a mere 10 minute trip on a Vaporetto to St Mark's Square. Alberto the owner is looking forward to our return and he and his staff will make sure we have everything we need. Fantastic breakfast (hot and cold) and Alberto's team make sure we are well looked after. Hotel Villa Delle Palme has a lovely Art Deco feel, a pretty garden and an observation turret with amazing views over the Lido to St. Mark’s Square with wonderful dawn to dusk panoramas. We think some of you may find that an inspiring vista. Perfect!
Hotel Villa delle Palme is a jewel entirely surrounded by thirty high palm trees. Converted to a hotel in 1950 and carefully renovated in 2002, the hotel still retains some of the original furniture, including precious Murano glass chandeliers and wall lamps. A generous buffet breakfast is served in a room with classic Venetian style furniture in shades of celestial blue and ivory.
All bedrooms have double beds, en-suite facilities and air conditioning, SKY television and mini bar (mini bar at your own cost). Each room has an internet link via ADSL. 3 Superior rooms have balconies which come with a supplement of £50 so early booking is advised if you want one of these.
We have chosen to stay on the Lido as after a busy day in the centre of Venice, you can relax and enjoy the convivial Lido atmosphere and amenities. The centre of Venice goes to bed very early, around 9.30 pm so staying here ensures we have an evening at a restaurant to enjoy ourselves after our busy days of painting and sightseeing. It is just a couple of minutes’ walk to the Boulevard and some lovely shops and restaurants. The film Death in Venice was filmed on the Lido. If you do want to visit the centre in the evening for concerts etc., it is only 10 minutes away and a 2 minute walk from the Vaporetto stop to the hotel.
Included in the accommodation price.Breakfast at the hotel and two dinners at a local restaurant are included in the accommodation price. Aperitifs and nibbles at the end of each day in the garden.
You are also welcome to visit one or all of the local islands such as Murano famous for it's glass making or Burano, the 'end of the rainbow' island with it's multi coloured houses.
“Venice is like eating an entire box of chocolate liqueurs in one go.” Truman Capote
‘If you read a lot, nothing is as you’ve imagined. Venice is - Venice is better!’ Fran Lebowitz
Who can forget Visconti’s film Death in Venice with the lovely Mahler music, or Don’t Look Now? Venice is a sumptuous feast, atmospheric and beautiful even in poor weather, full of colour, history, architecture, art, food and culture. The famous Basilica in St. Mark’s Square, countless churches and palazzi, art exhibitions - it’s a culture vulture’s paradise. We promise not to have any vertically challenged people in red coats but we can visit the church used in that other famous Venice based film 'Don't Look Now'!
We have taken over the whole delightful hotel for this week for our exclusive use.
For any of the guests we can arrange cookery classes or private tours with our friends in Venice.
The totally inclusive price for the week (without airfare or travel insurance) is £1650. This includes all your accommodation, water bus tickets, all breakfasts, 2 dinners with wine and and wine and nibbles in the garden at the end of each day.
Non-painting partners, sharing a double bedroom are welcomed at the very special price of £985.
Single guests welcome at no extra charge and there is no single person supplement.
The only thing we do not include are your flights. EasyJet fly into Marco Polo airport which is the most convenient airport to fly into and where we collect you by water taxi and take you to the hotel. Ryanair fly into Treviso which is further afield and you would have to get a shuttle bus to the water taxi to be collected. Most major international airlines fly into Venice Marco Polo.
We can include trips to Burano or Murano at no extra cost.
We can also arrange tours around Venice with a private tour guide and tickets to the opera house on the canal, the Teatro La Fenice, or cookery classes during the week (extra cost). Wonderful testimonial from Tim's students:“Thank you for the best watercolor demonstration I have ever seen. Can't tell you how much I enjoyed it, learned from it, and will share it with my students (some of whom are very good indeed). I found the chopped-into brush hilarious and will immediately find one I can chop up the same way and try some trees. The things that startled me were the delicacy of some of the calligraphy, the deep values of the shadows (occasionally blotted to achieve luminousity), and the beautiful placement of white highlights. I was also impressed by your leaving alone the trees on the right after you first put them down, and the lack of detail in the tree trunks and minimal indication of branches”Pat, USA“ I have found your demos very informative and useful; mainly as a guide to loosening my style and varying my brushwork technique. And there are other aspects I have much to learn, like your use of drop-in colour and your informal portrayal of figures.”Grainger, UK“I'm quite impressed with how you transform a dull image into an impressionistic and beautiful study of light and shadow. You're great tutor! I have chosen your videos as my starting point in watercolor”
“During your demos I try to imagine how I would paint an area, then watch you come in and handle it very differently than I would have, and I realize I would have completely ruined the painting. Your demos are very valuable to me as I was never shown how to approach a painting in any of the watercolor classes I've taken. I can't thank you enough for generously sharing your knowledge”
“I really like your loose style. I really want to learn from you how to paint shapes, not objects. Especially with the cars I always think in the beginning, that's never going to be recognizable as a vehicle and in the end you pull it together with a few simple shadows and highlights”
“Just a wicked picture Tim. I have had a go at street scenes similar to this and have not been sure how to deal with certain aspects of the composition but this demonstration has really helped me. I can appreciate the effect of hard and soft edges that you achieve and the powerful change in tones you employ to achieve such great lighting effects. Many thanks”
“The sheer body of work you have accomplished is simply staggering. I can’t help being inspired by the careful and wonderfully measured strokes of a genius"
